Artist's Statement & Bio
I've been a fine artist specializing in two dimensional mixed media abstracts for over
15 years.
Photographs have often been the source for my paintings.
I've also done home portraiture from client's photographs.
I graduated, summa cum laude from Carlow College in Pittsburgh, PA, in 1997,
with a BA in Fine Art/Art Education.
I started using digital photography for my painting portfolio and web-site in 1999
and began hand-coloring my original 35mm black & white and digital prints in 2001.
Later that year, I started creating hand-colored photographs from old family snapshots
scanned into my computer.
After a lot of research and experimentation, I created my own digital darkroom.

Original Fine Art Photographs
I use a professional quality digital SLR camera (although some of the photos on this web-site were taken
with a traditional 35mm SLR).
Next, I print an 8x10 black and white matte copy which I hand-color using photo-oil paint
and colored pencils. This process can take hours, depending on the complexity
of the image.
Once the hand-colored image has dried, I scan it
back onto the computer using a photo quality scanner.
I make all prints up to 11 x14 inches myself, using a 6-color
inkjet printer with archival quality inks and photo papers.
Creating hand-colored prints from old or new photos
I use a photo scanner to copy the original snapshot or negative
onto the computer. The computer image is digitally restored and modified for the
optimum result. The original photograph is never modified in any way!!
You receive: your original, untouched photograph; the original 8 x 10 hand-colored photo;
and a matted, ready to frame archival print.
Allow 4 - 6 weeks for completion.
Portrait Photography
I do casual indoor or outdoor portraits at your choice of location (within 60 miles of
the Pittsburgh International Airport). I use a Digital SLR camera allowing on-site
review and selection of shots.
At my studio, the image is loaded on the computer and I will make necessary corrections
such as cropping the image or removing unwanted power lines, etc.
